What a cool pic. We met Grandpap Fred (bottom right) of course. Mike knew him his whole life until Fred's passing. Mike's dad’s uncle Ted (top right) we met while Mike was in the navy. By that time, he was quite old. He and his wife lived in San Diego and our family would visit him on occasion. There were quite a few stories Mike heard in the family about Ted. For example, he served in the cavalry when they still road horses. We have a book from his unit with pictures that include him. After his time in the Army, he and a friend of his supposedly went to Mexico gold mining. By middle age, among other things, Ted was a San Diego golf pro. He was a favorite of famous golfers as a partner in pro-am tournaments.
The lady in the picture was their mother, Anna Baker Beach. Mike's dad shared stories about how she was no believer in ‘sparing the rod’. In fact, it didn’t matter if you were one of her children or just a kid from the neighborhood. If she thought you were up to no good her favorite weapon of choice was a broom handle. She at times would chase kids into the woods, pulling up her dress and waving the handle, thumping whoever was unlucky enough to have her catch them. Dad said she could outrun most of the kids.
