Memory Jar 1

Quite a few years ago I (Michelle) put this jar together. It's simple, but contains a powerful tool. You can see the curled up small pieces of paper. On each one is a task that relates to family history. Periodically we will pull one strip of paper from the jar, write here in this feed what it says, and each family member is to write a comment below in response. We have been holding virtual FHE monthly via Zoom during the pandemic, and this idea was discussed this month (March 2021). We decided to proceed in this manner. So here it goes.

Tell about your favorite uncle.

I don't know that I have a favorite, but one from each side of our family stands out.

On the Miller side it was Carl. He played in a band with other family members. He was the drummer. I took up drumming after watching him play so often. He was a bit of a 'dad-joker' before the moniker became common. He was a Viet Nam vet. He was also born with a concave-shaped chest. I remember seeing him once with his shirt off and asked him what happened. He smiled and said he was shot in the chest in Viet Nam. Then a smile came over his face as he added... "I didn't survive."

On the Beach side it would be Dean. He was a game warden in the Pocono Mountains of PA. He used to share stories about different ways they caught poachers. In particular I remember when a poacher had killed a mother bear. The cub was ok. Dean brought it to Gram & Pap Beach's house and called us all over to see the cub before they took it to a sanctuary. I got to hold the cub. I was really neat right up to the moment when it bit me on the hand. Thankfully it was not a serious bite. I think the cub was tired of getting passed around from human to human at that point and I got its complaint.

My favorite story about Uncle Dean I don't know many details about but it involved him not bothering the local mafia and them delivering a lot of wood and supplies to his property when he was building his house. This story came from dad so I'm not sure the total truth to it. Haha.

Pretty cool that Carl was in a band, I like how he was able to have humor for his condition.

Dean sounds awesome and I bet the catching of poachers was a rush, like a wild encounter! I liked the part about petting that bear cub also.

One of my favorite uncles was my Uncle Marvin who was married to my Aunt Janice (Mom's sister). I only knew him for a short time but I remember a thanksgiving dinner when they were there and I asked for the honey. Me being a little unaware, he said "i'm right here' not catching it I said no I want the honey. He was a teaser.

Another Uncle that I remember is Diane's husband Sam. I was staying with them before we got married and I remember coming back one Sunday night after being at home and he asked me if I was sure I wanted to get married so young. After all I had most of my life to be married and didn't I want to be single for a while?

I have never regretted marrying your dad so young, we have had many an adventure together.

I think my favorite Uncle stories have to be two. One when we were hiking north of the gravel pit and we all went through our water way too fast. We had way too long of a walk back and Uncle Rob had to come get us on his 4 wheeler.
Plus that time got to play plastic bb guns in the street with Troy and Rob it insprired us to go crazy once we got home. Ahah we stopped at like a farm shop that also had the basic style guns and we shot so many. Plus when dad was shooting us from the hole where the toilet was supposed to go while we couldnt figure it out 😂 epic.
