(BHP editor note: For those unfamiliar, 'Uncle Joe' is the brother-in-law of Paulene Beach, who is the editor's mother.) In past weeks we reported the passing of Paulene Beach, matriarch of the extended Beach family in Utah. In clearing out all Gandma's things there was one item in particular that had some real monetary value. It was one of those high-end motorized wheelchairs. When we looked online. It seemed to be worth several thousand dollars. We put it online for sale and waited to see what would happen.
What actually happened? In a word, nothing. Despite the need and the value it was clear the two were not matching up. It became obvious that those who could afford to buy one likely already had, and were not in the market for another. Those who needed but could not afford it, continued to make do with whatever arrangement they already had. Basically, we had nobody interested in buying it. So Lisa Mann, daughter to Paulene, asked around. The last few years of her life, Paulene lived in a neighborhood where many other older folks lived. After asking around, Lisa was able to get a referral of a Vietnam veteran in the neighborhood that could really use the chair, but had no way to pay for it. We decided to donate the chair to him. Paulene would have liked that. As it turns out, the fellow attends church with Crystal Dunn, another daughter to Paulene, and is good friends with her husband Jerry. Our angel mother passed peacefully to the next life surrounded by her family on January 24, 2019. She died at Ogden Regional Medical Center from complications from pneumonia.
She was born Paulene Fay Miller in Berwick, PA, to Lester Edmund Miller and Velma Pearl Wilson on March 7, 1941. She married Frederic Ambrose Beach on August 11, 1962, in Williamsport, PA. They were later sealed in the Washington D.C. Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in January 1975. Paulene loved spending time with her family. The holidays were her favorite because the family would be together. She loved to sew and crochet and made each of her children and grandchildren quilts for their weddings. She was an avid reader and loved novels involving church history. She loved doing family history work and located and provided work for over 40,000 ancestors. She worked in the Brigham City Temple once a week as a switchboard operator and loved every minute. She was a member of the Brigham City 16th ward She is survived by her children: Lisa (Curtis) Mann, North Ogden; Michael (Michelle) Beach, Stafford, VA; Daniel (Denise) Beach, Honeyville; Cris (Jerry) Dunn, Brigham City; and Vangee Nez, Sanostee, NM; 20 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; brother Paul Miller, Berwick, PA; and sisters Marqueen (Joseph) Kitta, Berwick, PA, and Shirley Miller, Boyertown, PA. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her sister Gladys, her brother Carl and grandson Schuyler. Funeral services will be held Friday, February 1, 2019, at 1 p.m. at Myers Mortuary Chapel, 205 S. 100 East, Brigham City, UT. A viewing will be held Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the mortuary. Interment will be at Calls Fort Cemetery. We wish to thank the nurses and doctors at Ogden Regional Medical Center’s Intermediate Care Unit for their very good care. Mom, you’ll always be our angel. You’ve watched over us all from the beginning and we know you’ll always be watching over us. Spread your wings and fly! Our loving wife, mother and grandmother, Karen Dee (Andersen)Thorsted, 75, returned home to her son and parents on Jan. 3, 2019. Karen graduated from Pocatello High School then attended Weber State University. Karen married Lloyd Dale Thorsted on May 3, 1963, in the Idaho Falls LDS temple. Karen was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in the Relief Society and Young Women programs. Karen also served four missions with her spouse, one to Nebraska and two to Palmyra, New York and at the Conference Center in Salt Lake City. Karen was a dedicated temple worker having worked in both the Ogden and Brigham temples. Karen loved to bake and sew for her family. Karen loved to play games with her family and brought much laughter and fun into her home. Karen was a wonderful friend to many and was a great example to her family through her service and faith.
